On this day in 1966 the tournament came to London, and at the month's end a final at Wembley ran to extra time and into the game's longest argument: did it cross the line? Our Finals volume gives that afternoon a full chapter, and takes no side.

The southern World Cup — two hosts, one Tasman rivalry, a Melbourne final before ninety-three thousand — completes our run of eight cricket editions, from Lahore to Ahmedabad. The green shelf is, for now, full.

The Wankhede night, fifteen years on

Fifteen years since a captain's six sailed into the Mumbai stands and a nation's twenty-eight-year wait ended. The 2011 volume sets that finish as a scoreboard to complete — we still know collectors who cannot bring themselves to fill in the last over.

Setting a scoreboard in type

A scoreboard is a story told in numerals, and typesetting one is closer to engraving than to layout. Rules must align to the hairline; the gold must be rationed. We rebuilt our scoreboard plate eleven times before it earned its page.
